Sailing and boating schools
The children’s sailing and boating courses are intended for 7–13-year-olds who are interested in sailing and boating. Participants must be able to swim, because it is not unheard for dinghy sailors to fall into the sea. Being able to swim 25 metres in a swimming pool is the minimum requirement.
The courses are taught in Finnish, but instruction can also be provided in English if needed.
Our courses for youngsters and adults are here.
What you will learn?
Children learn the basics of sailing while having fun on the water through games and playful exercises. We have exercises on the shore, in the classroom and obviously on the water. Weather permitting, we also enjoy capsizing the dinghy and climbing back aboard.
In the boating section of the course, participants learn the basics of navigation and safe boating — such as recognizing nautical signs, steering according to them, and essential boating skills (like the most important knots).
Beginners’ course
During the beginner’s course, you will learn the basics, such as getting your boat ready for sailing, starting off from the shore, the basics skills of sailing, and returning to shore. You will learn to use the rudder to steer and the sheet to adjust the sail, to tack (turn a boat’s head into and through the wind) and gybe (swing the sail across a following wind).
Participants in the beginner course don’t need any previous sailing or boating experience. All the necessary skills are practiced together during the course week. If you already have some experience on the water, take a look at our advanced course options.
Advanced course
The advanced sailing and boating course is ideal for young sailors who have already completed a beginners’ course, taken part in a sailing group, or who already have similar sailing experience.
In the advanced course you will learn more advanced sailing skills such as sailing into the wind (tacking) and into the tailwind, sailing different types of courses, cruising and much more!
